#1 — Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail#

The Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail is a roughly 2.5-mile round-trip hike up a paved pathway on the island's southeastern tip. It's a steady, manageable climb that rewards you with sweeping views of the coastline, the historic red-roofed lighthouse, and the offshore islands (Manana, aka Rabbit Island).

#2 — Tantalus Lookout#

Tantalus Lookout (Pu'u 'Ualaka'a State Wayside) is one of the best places to take in the skyline of Honolulu, Waikiki, and Diamond Head all in one sweeping frame. The winding drive up Tantalus and Round Top Drive through the rainforest is half the fun.

It's a perfect sunset spot — come a little before golden hour and watch the city lights flicker on as the sky changes. Parking and entry are free; just note the gate closes in the evening, so check the posted hours before you go.

#3 — Halona Blowhole Lookout#

Last but not least, the Halona Blowhole Lookout offers beautiful cliffside views where waves surge through a lava tube and shoot a plume of seawater into the air — best after a good swell. It's a quick stop right off the highway, and very refreshing.

Just below sits Halona Cove (nicknamed "Eternity Beach," where a famous scene from From Here to Eternity was filmed) — a small, pretty cove tucked between the rocks. Stay behind the railings near the blowhole; the rocks are slippery and the surf here is powerful.

• Start early. Parking and shade are both easier before mid-morning, and the light is better for photos.
• Reef-safe sunscreen only. Hawaii bans oxybenzone/octinoxate sunscreens — bring mineral (zinc).
• Bring water and sturdy shoes. Especially for Makapu'u.
• Respect the aina. Stay on marked trails and behind barriers, and pack out everything you bring.
