This section is a plain-English summary. The legal text in the sections below governs. If there is any conflict between this summary and the legal text, the legal text controls.
Y🪢 connects you with other people. If you choose to meet any of those people in person, that meeting is your own decision and your own responsibility. We do not attend your meetings. We do not know what will happen at them. We cannot guarantee that the person you are meeting is who they say they are, is safe, or has good intentions.
By using the Platform, you agree to:
Take responsibility for your own safety when meeting people you connected with through Y🪢
Not sue us for things that happen at meetings you arrange through the Platform, to the extent permitted by law
Understand that we do not conduct criminal background checks on users
Take reasonable safety precautions before and during any in-person meeting
We are not asking you to give up all your legal rights. If we are grossly negligent, commit fraud, or engage in willful misconduct, this Agreement does not protect us from liability for those things. This Agreement is not unconscionable — it reflects a reasonable and proportionate allocation of risk. It is modeled on the approach used by comparable platforms including Bumble, Meetup, Craigslist, and Facebook Marketplace.
YKnot Love Incorporated (“YKnot,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates Y🪢 (“the Platform”), an intent-first connection platform that enables adult users to post short messages called “lines” expressing a desire for romantic, social, or platonic connection. The Platform is designed to facilitate introductions between users; it is not designed to supervise, monitor, or control what users do after those introductions are made.
This Liability Waiver and Assumption of Risk Agreement (“Agreement”) is designed to clearly communicate the inherent risks of meeting strangers in person, document your knowing and voluntary acceptance of those risks, and establish the scope of YKnot’s limited liability in connection with in-person meetings.
This Agreement is not intended to be unconscionable. It does not purport to eliminate YKnot’s liability for fraud, gross negligence, or willful misconduct. It does not waive claims arising under consumer protection laws that cannot be waived by private agreement.
YKnot is an introduction platform, not a dating service, vetting agency, background screening service, or safety guarantor. Our role is analogous to a bulletin board: we provide the space and structure for users to express their connection intent, but we do not:
Meet users in person or attend any user-arranged meetings
Verify the identity, criminal history, or character of any user beyond our age verification and optional identity verification steps
Guarantee that any user is who they represent themselves to be
Monitor, record, or have knowledge of what occurs at user-arranged meetings
Provide security, supervision, or oversight of any real-world interaction
Conduct mandatory criminal background checks or sex offender registry checks on users
This Agreement is consistent with the approach taken by the following platforms:
Bumble: Expressly disclaims responsibility for user behavior offline; disclaims all indirect, consequential, and punitive damages; provides that the user’s sole remedy for dissatisfaction is to stop using the app; liability waiver survives even if found to have failed its essential purpose
Meetup: Releases organizers and platform from claims arising out of user interactions and in-person events; requires California Civil Code §1542 waiver; does not conduct background checks on organizers or members
Craigslist: Broad AS IS disclaimer; disclaims all liability for user conduct on or off platform; recommends meeting in public places; explicitly warns users of risks of meeting strangers; includes liquidated damages provision for platform abuse
Facebook Marketplace: Disclaims responsibility for in-person transactions and meetings; does not guarantee identity or trustworthiness of users; recommends meeting in safe public locations
Y🪢’s approach is consistent with or more protective for users than all four of these platforms, as our Agreement preserves claims for gross negligence and fraud that several comparable platforms attempt to waive entirely.
The following risks are inherent in meeting any person — including a person met through Y🪢 — in the physical world. By using the Platform, you acknowledge that you understand these risks and accept them voluntarily.
The person you meet may not be who they represent themselves to be online
Profile photographs may not accurately reflect the person’s current appearance
Information provided in a line or profile may be inaccurate, exaggerated, or false
A user may be acting under a false name, false identity, or false pretenses
Any person you meet may present risks to your physical safety
A meeting may occur in a location that presents independent safety risks
In-person interactions may escalate in ways you did not anticipate or intend
A person may behave differently in person than they did in online communications
You may be vulnerable to theft, fraud, or other property crimes during or after a meeting
YKnot does not conduct mandatory criminal background checks on users
A user may have a criminal history, including prior convictions for violent offenses, sexual offenses, fraud, or other crimes
A user may have a history of harmful behavior that is not reflected in any publicly available record
We cannot guarantee that our prohibition on registered sex offenders is perfectly enforced, as we rely on self-certification and behavioral detection rather than mandatory database checks
Outdoor activities (hiking, surfing, paddleboarding, running, cycling) carry inherent risks of physical injury, accident, or death associated with those activities
Meetings at private locations carry additional risks compared to meetings in public places
Meetings involving alcohol or substances carry additional risks
Nighttime meetings in unfamiliar areas may carry additional risks
Romantic connections carry additional emotional risks of rejection, disappointment, or unwanted advances
Third parties present at or near a meeting may pose risks that neither YKnot nor the other user could anticipate
The venue or location of a meeting may present risks unrelated to the other user
You may be at risk of property damage, theft, or financial fraud in connection with a meeting
Counterfeit goods, fraudulent offers, or misrepresented items may be involved in commercially-adjacent meetings
BY USING THE PLATFORM AND ARRANGING OR ATTENDING ANY IN-PERSON MEETING WITH ANOTHER USER, YOU EXPRESSLY AND VOLUNTARILY ASSUME ALL RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THOSE MEETINGS, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE RISKS DESCRIBED IN SECTION 3 AND ANY OTHER RISKS INHERENT IN MEETING STRANGERS IN THE PHYSICAL WORLD.
Your decision to arrange or attend any in-person meeting with another user is entirely voluntary
You have not been required, pressured, or compelled by YKnot to meet any user in person
You have exercised your own independent judgment in deciding whether to meet any particular user
You are entering into this Agreement freely, without duress, and with full understanding of its terms
You are aware of the inherent risks described in Section 3 and any other risks associated with meeting strangers in person
You understand that no connection platform can eliminate these risks
You understand that YKnot has no control over the conduct of its users once they leave the Platform
You take personal responsibility for your own physical safety, emotional wellbeing, and property
You will take appropriate precautions before and during any in-person meeting (see Section 7)
You will not hold YKnot responsible for the consequences of your own decisions to meet other users in person
THIS SECTION CONTAINS YOUR RELEASE OF YKNOT FROM LIABILITY. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY. THIS RELEASE IS SUBJECT TO IMPORTANT EXCEPTIONS DESCRIBED IN SECTION 5.3.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, you hereby release, waive, discharge, and covenant not to sue YKnot Love Incorporated, its directors, officers, employees, agents, affiliates, successors, and assigns (collectively, “Released Parties”) from any and all claims, demands, actions, causes of action, damages, losses, costs, and expenses (including attorneys’ fees) of any kind or nature, whether known or unknown, arising out of or related to:
Any in-person meeting between you and any other user arranged through or facilitated by the Platform
Any injury, illness, death, property damage, or other harm you suffer as a result of or in connection with any such meeting
The conduct, character, identity, or misrepresentations of any other user you meet through the Platform
Any activity you engage in with another user, whether or not that activity was described in the relevant line
Any third-party actions occurring at or near a meeting arranged through the Platform
Your reliance on information provided by other users in their lines, profiles, or messages
This release applies to claims based in negligence (including ordinary negligence of the Released Parties), strict liability, products liability, breach of contract, breach of warranty, and any other legal or equitable theory. THIS RELEASE APPLIES EVEN IF WE WERE ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH HARM. This is consistent with the liability waiver approach of comparable platforms including Bumble, which provides that limitations of liability survive even if found to have failed their essential purpose.
The following are NOT covered by this release. This Agreement is not unconscionable because it preserves your right to bring claims for the following:
Gross negligence or reckless disregard: Claims arising from YKnot’s gross negligence or reckless disregard for user safety are not covered
Willful misconduct or intentional wrongdoing: Claims arising from YKnot’s intentional or willful harmful acts are not released
Fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation: Claims arising from YKnot’s own fraud are not released
Consumer protection claims: Claims under consumer protection statutes that cannot be waived by private agreement under applicable law are not released
Statutory rights that cannot be waived: Any rights granted to you by statute that are not waivable by private agreement are preserved
The presence of these exceptions is deliberate. YKnot is not seeking to shield itself from all liability regardless of its own conduct. Note: Bumble’s terms similarly carve out fraud and liability that cannot be limited by applicable law.
If you are a California resident, you expressly waive the protections of California Civil Code Section 1542, which provides:
“A GENERAL RELEASE DOES NOT EXTEND TO CLAIMS THAT THE CREDITOR OR RELEASING PARTY DOES NOT KNOW OR SUSPECT TO EXIST IN HIS OR HER FAVOR AT THE TIME OF EXECUTING THE RELEASE AND THAT, IF KNOWN BY HIM OR HER, WOULD HAVE MATERIALLY AFFECTED HIS OR HER SETTLEMENT WITH THE DEBTOR OR RELEASED PARTY.”
By agreeing to this release, you acknowledge that you may discover facts in addition to or different from those you now know or believe to be true, and that it is your intention to release and discharge all claims described in Section 5.1 regardless of any such additional or different facts. This provision is consistent with Meetup’s Terms of Service, which includes an identical California Civil Code §1542 waiver.
To the extent any other jurisdiction has a statute similar in purpose to California Civil Code Section 1542 that limits the scope of general releases, you expressly waive the protections of any such statute to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law.
In addition to the release in Section 5, you agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Released Parties from and against any and all claims, demands, causes of action, damages, losses, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) brought by any third party arising out of or related to:
Your in-person meetings with other users arranged through the Platform
Your conduct during or after any such meeting
Any harm you cause to another user during or as a result of a Platform-facilitated meeting
Your breach of this Agreement or the Terms of Service
Your misrepresentation of your identity, intentions, or other material facts to other users
Your negligent or intentional harmful acts in connection with any Platform-facilitated meeting
Your indemnification obligation survives the termination of your account and the expiration or termination of this Agreement. This provision is consistent with comparable platform indemnification clauses including those of Bumble and Facebook Marketplace.
THE FOLLOWING SAFETY REQUIREMENTS ARE CONDITIONS OF PLATFORM USE. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE REQUIREMENTS CONSTITUTES A BREACH OF THE TERMS OF SERVICE.
You must represent your identity, appearance, and intentions honestly to any person you agree to meet
You must respect the boundaries, comfort level, and right to leave at any time of any person you meet
You must not use a Platform-arranged meeting to engage in any conduct prohibited by our Acceptable Use Policy, Content Moderation Policy, or any applicable law
You must not use a Platform-arranged meeting to recruit, solicit, or target the other person for commercial purposes
You must not use a Platform-arranged meeting to commit any crime, including but not limited to assault, battery, theft, sexual assault, or fraud
You must comply with all applicable laws in connection with any Platform-facilitated meeting
The following safety recommendations are based on best practices compiled from guidance published by Bumble, Meetup, Match Group, the National Domestic Violence Hotline, the FBI, and the safety guidance of Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. We strongly encourage you to follow all of them.
Tell a trusted friend or family member where you are going, who you are meeting, and when you expect to return
Share the other person’s profile link or line with your trusted contact before leaving
Arrange your own transportation to and from the meeting location
Conduct a brief online search of the person’s name and profile information
Trust your instincts — if something feels wrong, you are not obligated to proceed
Set a check-in time with your trusted contact during the meeting
Meet in a well-lit, heavily trafficked public place for all initial meetings — a coffee shop, restaurant, park, or other populated venue
Avoid isolated locations, private residences, or enclosed private spaces for first meetings
Never meet at someone’s home for a first encounter
Some communities designate “safe zones” near police stations for in-person transactions and meetings — consider using these for first meetings
Keep your phone charged and accessible throughout the meeting
Do not leave your drink unattended
Do not share sensitive personal information (home address, workplace, financial information) at an initial meeting
You have the right to leave at any time and for any reason
Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, which impairs your ability to assess risk
Do not pay in advance or transfer money before meeting
Check in with your trusted contact after the meeting
If you experienced anything threatening, harassing, or illegal during the meeting, report it to law enforcement and to us at info@yknot.love
If you believe you are being followed or are in danger, go immediately to a public place and call 911
In-Platform reporting: Report another user at any time using the three-dot menu on their profile or line
Block: Block any user at any time to prevent further contact
EMERGENCY RESOURCES: If you are in immediate danger, call 911. National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233. National Sexual Assault Hotline: 1-800-656-4673. Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741. NCMEC (child exploitation): 1-800-843-5678.
WE DO NOT CONDUCT MANDATORY CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS, SEX OFFENDER REGISTRY CHECKS, OR OTHER FORMAL SCREENING OF USERS. THIS DISCLOSURE IS CONSISTENT WITH THE APPROACH OF BUMBLE, HINGE, TINDER, MEETUP, CRAIGSLIST, AND FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE, NONE OF WHOM CONDUCT MANDATORY BACKGROUND CHECKS ON USERS. BY USING THE PLATFORM, YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THIS DISCLOSURE AND UNDERSTAND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR YOUR PERSONAL SAFETY.
We do not search criminal databases for user information, check state or national sex offender registries, verify employment or professional credentials, verify the marital or relationship status of users, or verify any information users provide about themselves other than age (18+ verification) and our optional identity verification.
We do require users to self-certify that they are not registered sex offenders, and we terminate accounts when we receive credible reports that a user is a registered sex offender. However, self-certification is not equivalent to a background check.
Third-party services exist that allow individuals to conduct background checks on persons they meet online. We encourage you to use these services if background information is important to your decision about whether to meet a particular user in person.
Background checks do not guarantee safety — they reflect a person’s history, not their present intentions
Criminal records are not complete or uniformly accessible, and a clean record does not mean a person presents no risk
Representing that background checks guarantee safety could create a false sense of security that leads users to take fewer precautions
We may at our sole discretion use optional identity verification services such as Didit or Veriff, but such verification is not a background check and does not assess criminal history
Romantic connections arranged through the Platform carry specific risks beyond those of social or platonic connections, including unwanted physical contact or sexual advances, emotional manipulation or coercive control, misrepresentation of romantic intent, and sexual assault or intimate partner violence.
If you experience sexual assault, contact the National Sexual Assault Hotline (1-800-656-4673) and local law enforcement. Report the user to us immediately at info@yknot.love.
The Platform encourages connection through shared activities, many of which carry inherent risks including physical injury, drowning, falls, environmental hazards, and medical emergencies. By arranging or joining an outdoor or physical activity through the Platform, you assume all risks associated with that activity. You are responsible for ensuring you have appropriate fitness, equipment, and skill level for any activity you participate in.
Lines inviting multiple users to a group event carry additional risks: the organizer cannot control the conduct of all attendees; individuals may attend who were not the originally intended respondents; group dynamics may create pressure or situations the individual did not anticipate. The organizer is responsible for the appropriateness and safety of the event they are organizing.
Meetings at bars, restaurants, or other venues where alcohol is served carry additional risks. You assume all risks associated with the consumption of alcohol or other substances at Platform-facilitated meetings, including impairment of judgment, increased vulnerability to harm, and inability to accurately assess risk.
If you arrange a meeting through the Platform that involves the exchange of goods, money, or other property, you assume all risks associated with that transaction, including the risk of counterfeit goods, theft, fraud, and personal injury. This waiver is consistent with the approach of Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist for in-person transactions. Never pay in advance, never meet at a private location for property transactions, and verify payment authenticity before completing any exchange.
YKNOT SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO ANY IN-PERSON MEETING BETWEEN USERS, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO DAMAGES FOR PERSONAL INJURY, EMOTIONAL DISTRESS, PROPERTY DAMAGE, LOSS OF INCOME, OR WRONGFUL DEATH, EVEN IF YKNOT WAS ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. THIS LIMITATION OF LIABILITY IS A FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENT OF THE BASIS OF THE BARGAIN AND REFLECTS A FAIR ALLOCATION OF RISK. THE PLATFORM WOULD NOT BE PROVIDED WITHOUT SUCH LIMITATIONS. THIS LIMITATION APPLIES EVEN IF FOUND TO HAVE FAILED IN ITS ESSENTIAL PURPOSE, CONSISTENT WITH THE APPROACH OF COMPARABLE PLATFORMS INCLUDING BUMBLE.
TO THE EXTENT ANY LIABILITY OF YKNOT IS NOT COVERED BY THE RELEASE IN SECTION 5, YKNOT’S TOTAL LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO IN-PERSON MEETINGS ARRANGED THROUGH THE PLATFORM SHALL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF: (A) THE TOTAL FEES YOU PAID TO YKNOT IN THE 12 MONTHS PRECEDING THE INCIDENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM; OR (B) ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($100.00).
IF YOU BECOME DISSATISFIED IN ANY WAY WITH THE PLATFORM, YOUR SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY IS TO STOP YOUR USE OF THE PLATFORM AND CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNT. THIS PROVISION IS CONSISTENT WITH THE TERMS OF COMPARABLE PLATFORMS INCLUDING BUMBLE.
Some jurisdictions do not permit the exclusion or limitation of liability for personal injury or death. In those jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the greatest extent permitted by applicable law. If any provision of this Section is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect.
I understand that Y🪢 does not guarantee the safety, identity, character, or intentions of any user I meet through the Platform
I understand that YKnot has no control over what occurs at in-person meetings between users
I understand that YKnot does not conduct mandatory criminal background checks on users

My decision to meet any user in person is my own voluntary decision
I have exercised my own independent judgment in deciding to meet any particular user
I have had the opportunity to review this Agreement and have read and understood it
I am at least 18 years of age and legally competent to enter into this Agreement
I accept personal responsibility for my own safety at any Platform-facilitated meeting
I understand and will follow the safety recommendations in Section 7
I understand that meeting in a public place, especially for first meetings, is an important safety measure
I understand that I am releasing YKnot from liability for many types of harm that may occur at Platform-facilitated meetings
I understand that this release does not cover YKnot’s own gross negligence, fraud, or willful misconduct
I have read this Agreement in its entirety and agree to all of its terms
This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Delaware, without regard to conflict of law principles. However, to the extent any provision of this Agreement would be void or unenforceable under the laws of the state in which a claim is brought, the law of that state shall apply to that provision only.
Any dispute arising out of or related to this Agreement is subject to the mandatory arbitration and class action waiver provisions in Section 18 of the Terms of Service. You agree that any such dispute shall be resolved through binding individual arbitration, not through a court of law, except as expressly provided in the Terms of Service.
If any provision of this Agreement is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect. An unenforceable provision shall be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it enforceable, consistent with the intent of this Agreement.
This Agreement has been designed with care to avoid unconscionability. Specific design choices made to ensure this Agreement is not unconscionable include:
Preserving claims for gross negligence, fraud, and willful misconduct
Providing a plain-English summary in Section 1 so that the terms are accessible to non-lawyers
Calibrating the release to the genuine limits of YKnot’s control (in-person meetings) rather than seeking blanket immunity
Preserving statutory consumer protection rights that cannot be waived
Providing meaningful safety guidance and resources to reduce the risks being assumed
Offering a liability cap ($100 or fees paid) rather than a complete exclusion of all liability
Ensuring the Agreement is prominently disclosed and accepted, not buried in fine print
We may update this Agreement from time to time to reflect changes in applicable law, changes in the nature of the Platform, or lessons learned from operational experience. Material updates will be communicated to users via email and in-Platform notice at least 30 days before taking effect. Continued use of the Platform after the effective date of an updated Agreement constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
